NEES Teleseminar

Speaker: Kevin Leung
Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque

NEES Principal Investigator Kevin Leung from Sandia National Laboratories at Albuquerque will present overview perspectives and opportunities on two very interesting battery-related topics to the broader NEES community.

Battery and Time

Extending the longevity of lithium ion batteries is a universal goal, and the rate of lithium transport is a central to battery studies. However, other aspects of time-dependence are largely neglected, such as the chemical kinetics of passivation film “SEI” formation and destruction. To some extent “in-situ” measurements should address these topics; while tremendous progress has been made, it is challenging to span the many decades of timescales involved. Here we highlight the new paradigm of “SEI destruction” (rather than formation) relevant to battery life times, propose a critical reaction time scale that govern such reactions, and discuss the link between liquid battery SEI and all-solid state batteries.

Flow Batteries

The scope of NEES 2 research is broad and includes many battery types and chemistries. But stationary storage, especially redox flow batteries, has seldom been addressed (expect in one teleseminar by the Shao-Horn group). In this discussion, I will give a brief introduction to redox flow batteries, present modeling predictions of the unusual electric double layer structure in organic electrolyte flow batteries, and identify potential areas NEES can contribute such as the use of nanochannel-based separators and water-in-salt electrolytes.
